New Art..Ann Dvorak!

I just finished this last night, a graphite portrait of the great Ann Dvorak. I've had her on my list for a long time and was recently motivated to get this piece done by Christina over at Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel who's been doing a post on Ann every day as part of her "A Year of Ann Dvorak" Blogathon and asked if anyone wanted to contribute. Also recently I watched "The Strange Love of Molly Louvain" one of Ann's few starring vehicles at WB and I really enjoyed the film...couple that with the fact that I watch "Three on a Match" once every 3 or 4 months or so and yeah, time for a picture of Ann! Tech stuff: 2H and HB pencils and a bit of white pastel pencil on 13" x 17" tinted canson paper

BRIGHT LIGHTS!

These just came today...2 vintage Lobby Cards for the 1935 WB production "Bright Lights" starring Joe E Brown, Ann Dvorak and Patricia "Mrs Artman" Ellis!

These are my first ever Joe E and/or Ann Dvorak Lobby cards and to be from my fave Joe E film and feature Mrs Artman in my fave gown she ever wore on screen and that they are such colorful and attractive cards in decent enough condition, I am extremely happy to have these in my grubby hands now!

In keeping with my love of collecting all things from WB studio during the 30's and 40's here's two vintage 5 x 7 studio promotional cards with faux signatures I nabbed last week...my first solo collectables for either of these lovely ladies! Yay!

New Artwork...

A revised version of a portrait of Angelina Jolie I did back in 2005. I have always liked her pose and expression and liked the overall shape of her hat, but as time went on I realized my original execution fell far short of the pictures potential and was worth a re-doing at some point when I felt confident enough to improve on it. Never too far from my mind was the work of the Pre-Raphaelite masters of the Victorian era, especially John Millais, William Holman Hunt and Arthur Hughes and also the classicists Fredrick Leighton and Herbert Draper. I studied their work intensely while working on this picture, especially Hughes' "The Long Engagement" and Draper's "Potpourri". Even to attempt working in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites means much labor time and tho I don't have an exact figure, I know i spent well over 100 hours on this, more than 12 hours alone just on the bow.

Tech stuff: all colored pencil on 18" x 20" museum board. I used 88 different pencils from about 6 different brands and lots of solvent.

I picked this Lobby Card up a couple weeks ago...all 3 Lone Wolf lobby cards I now own are all from the same film!

Mrs Artman wears Pannytoes!!!

Two more signed 8" x 10" pictures of Patricia "Mrs Artman2112" Ellis I've acquired within the past few months.

OK now to TRY and explain the "Pannytoes" reference in the title...when my niece was little she LOVED playing dress up and of course always wanted to wear Pantyhose, but being as she was like 3 she called them "Pannytoes", so of course the whole family calls them that to this day! Anyway imagine my delight and joy when I see Mrs Artman sporting REAL Pannytoes...that is, pantyhose with the toes exposed!!

I love when vintage stills come with these little blurbs attached to the back!

Mrs. Artman Alert Part III!

Patricia Ellis's 3rd and final uncredited appearance was in the 1932 WB production "Central Park", starring Joan Blondell and Wallace Ford. Patricia has one scene about 35 minutes into the film with perennial gangster character actor Harold Huber. Its 57 minutes of pure WB B-film and they throw in everything but the kitchen sink, plus we get Guy Kibbee to boot!
