New Artwork...Toby Wing!

Just finished this up last night...

"Portrait of Toby Wing" - For those that aren't familiar with her, Toby was a chorus girl and actress in the 1930's, usually showing up in either a Paramount or Warner Bros picture. She appeared in several of those famous Busby Berkely musical numbers, often being one of the "Close-up girls". She was photographed and publicized constantly and even has a star on the Holly wood walk of fame! Not bad considering almost all of her film appearances are uncredited bit parts!

All colored pencil on 15" x 15" strathmore 500 series tinted paper. I used only 2 colors, dark umber and white, which is something I never tried before but I wanted to emulate the vintage sepia look of the old movie star photos. Also, I rarely ever make a square picture and for some reason I rarely ever draw blondes!

If you like this picture stop by my facebook page and "like" it and share the art with others!

New Artwork...

Finished up this past weekend, another "Master Copy" exercise working from a Frank Frazetta oil masterpiece, this time "Silver Warrior", which I added a little twist to and changed into Wonder Woman, haha! Just copying exactly would be boring for me so I have to do something to add some fun to the challenge of ATTEMPTING to emulate Frank's painterly style using colored pencils...I am very pleased with how this came out and rather like to think Wonder Woman fits this concept well. I tried my best to make her look like how a Frazetta Wonder Woman might look and I enjoyed designing the Wonder Sleigh! I learned some valuable lessons making this picture and that's what these copy exercises are all about. OK...next?

btw for those that might be interested I now have a facebook page dedicated to my art. I post all the finished work as well as Work in Progress and other fun and/or useless things

New Artwork...

A revised version of a portrait of Angelina Jolie I did back in 2005. I have always liked her pose and expression and liked the overall shape of her hat, but as time went on I realized my original execution fell far short of the pictures potential and was worth a re-doing at some point when I felt confident enough to improve on it. Never too far from my mind was the work of the Pre-Raphaelite masters of the Victorian era, especially John Millais, William Holman Hunt and Arthur Hughes and also the classicists Fredrick Leighton and Herbert Draper. I studied their work intensely while working on this picture, especially Hughes' "The Long Engagement" and Draper's "Potpourri". Even to attempt working in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites means much labor time and tho I don't have an exact figure, I know i spent well over 100 hours on this, more than 12 hours alone just on the bow.

Tech stuff: all colored pencil on 18" x 20" museum board. I used 88 different pencils from about 6 different brands and lots of solvent.

Below is the 2005 version.

Happy Birthday Shayera-Hol...

better known as Hawkgirl

I did this colored pencil drawing of her about 8 or 9 years ago. Based more on Bruce Timm's version of her than anyone elses.

Title: "Kinda-Maybe-Somewhat-Semi-Sort-of"

all colored pencil on 15" x 26" museum board, its basically life size. By the time I finished I had used 92 different pencils.

Just having some fun with "Steampunk". This is the first time I ever worked from pictures of a model that I took myself. Yes her neck is really that long and graceful.

It looks better in person.

New Artwork...

Just in time for Harley-Ween!

Inspired by Mucha's "Moon and Stars" series, I took a slightly less serious approach. Colored Pencil and Neo Color II crayons on 15"x31" museum board. Many thanks to the model Rachel. The figure study was posted sometime ago but I really didnt know what to do with it, so I put it aside and went onto something else. Eventually these things work themselves out, usually when I'm not actually trying to think of it.

This is just an Art Nouveau warm-up for the picture of Poison Ivy that I'm working on....see me in about 2 months!

New Artwork...

Just finished this last night...

"Psylocke"

My very special friend and fellow blogger Lotus flower recently introduced me to this Marvel comics character and I immediately liked her look and her mythos! I had this great picture of a model posed with a sword and thought it was fitting for her and so I worked up a sketch of the figure and went from there....this is what I ended up with. My first marvel character, it was fun!

Colored pencil and Neocolor II crayons, lots of water, lots of solvent on 13" x 16" museum board.

New Artwork...

Been a long time since I posted anything of my own here....that it's following on the heels of a Frazetta post means either I have guts or I'm an idiot!

Title: "Burn - Clara Bow Opus 7"

I've been working on this steadily for nearly 2 months now and just finished it this past Sunday. Ths is actually the 3rd version of this pose I've tried within the last 8 or 9 years but the other 2 just never came out right to me. I knew i'd go for it again someday and I think I finally have this picture out of my system!

Colored pencil and neocolor II crayons (b/g only) on 22" x 28" museum board.

As for the nasty watermark, you can thank the dipshit who decided to repost entire years of my blog without giving me credit for it!

New Artwork...

I finished this one up the other night. Took about 3 months on and off.

Approx 13" x 16" all colored pencil on Vellum surface Bristol paper. I still dont have a title for the piece.

Inspired by Clara Bow but inadvertantly ended up looking a bit like a friend of mine as well!

At any rate, I like her!

New Artwork...

Having fun with Vampirella again, in color this time

Approx 10" x 16", all colored pencil on vellum surface Bristol paper. Parts of this look OK to me but I still like the pencil sketch better. I did learn a few new valuable techniques with solvents on this one so, as always, it was worth doing even if the end result isnt exactly what I was shooting for.
